Elementary School Picnic

Yesterday (Friday) we went to a picnic for Laura Elementary School and Rita Elementary School (Rita is downtown Majuro, named after Rita Hayworth apparently). While we waited for the barbecue, we drank coconuts. Here's Eric and our friend Amy, a WorldTeach volunteer at Rita Elementary.

Amy and Clint are down on the beach trying to break their coconuts open on rocks. Clint is Australian, he's been working in the RMI for about a year.

Success! So far I haven't been able to break open my own coconut, I always need assistance. So there's a goal for the year...

Here's the food. SO MUCH meat. That cooler back there was full of raw chicken, ribs, and hot dogs marinating in deliciousness. Marshallese barbecue is great and so far our main source of meat, because at home we eat mostly beans, rice, pasta, chickpeas, tuna, that sort of thing. The picnic also had tons of rice, fried rice, green bean-cracker salad, cole slaw, potato salad, pasta with meat sauce, banana lumpia (sort of like a soft spring roll with banana inside), fried taro, bread with coconut sauce, cake, coconuts, pumpkin paste, and more. I like the bbq chicken, taro, and banana lumpia best. Yum.
